The Challenge
With approximately 6,000 births annually to families in Flagler & Volusia Counties, there are many significant challenges that can negatively impact outcomes for both moms and babies. Challenges such as timely access to prenatal care, chronic underlying health conditions, mental health concerns, substance use and financial stability consistently contribute to adverse birth outcomes in our community.
- 10.3% of Volusia births are preterm – above the state average
- 9.1% of babies are born low birthweight
- Approximately half of all births are covered by Medicaid, reflecting economic vulnerability
- Flagler families often travel 30+ minutes for prenatal care
Why Your Support Matters
Across Florida, 32 Healthy Start Coalitions were established to respond to local needs in their respective communities. Each coalition operates as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit entity by design, allowing coalitions the ability to seek additional local support and resources to address the complex and varied needs of each family we serve.
